Law enforcement

Prosecutors, judges and lawyers are in the group of people that are increasingly in contact with digital evidence in criminal proceedings in their everyday life.

Their competences clearly don't include detailed technical knowledge, but recognizing the nature of digital evidence, the possibilities of digital forensics in general, problems as well as knowing methodology of forensic investigations is a must. There is an interesting ruling by an USA judge (United States v. Schlingloff case, 2012) who rejected digital evidence brought before the court just because the investigator used the forensic software with the wrong settings.
